Position Description

Are you looking to challenge your skills in the cutting edge of new technology?  Then Serco has a job for you!  Serco is looking for a mid-level Engineer to support standards and certification development of Advanced Batteries at Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA).  This program is designed to establish Naval-wide digital guidance for developing batteries, containment systems and managing associated hazards through implementation of digital engineering practices.  The battery energy team uses a model Based Systems Engineering approach to deliver battery system models to support the Navy's battery requirements.

As a Battery Standards & Certification Engineer for NAVSEA 05Z – Electric Power Systems you will:

 

Assist the Engineering Manager for Batteries with:

  • Perform professional engineering and scientific work exploring electrical and chemical phenomena and the behavior of electro-chemical energy currents
  • Design and development of batteries, energy storage, and electro-chemical equipment, components, or systems.
  • Development of energy storage electro-chemical designs, and preparation of construction drawings for energy storage and electro-chemical systems and equipment.
  • Development of design requirements and support the development and maintenance for your assigned systems and components.
  • Development of electrical engineering guidelines for command headquarters and for field activities, in the form of manuals, circulars, letters and directives.
  • Conduct risk assessments, investigations, analyses and design modifications of subsystems and new equipment for production, transmission, measurement, control and use of electrical power.
  • Plan, initiate, and manage the development of design alternatives in support of both ongoing and proposed new designs for cognizant systems.
  • Monitor and participate in development and certification of battery and battery storage systems.
  • Act as an advisor across multiple Subject Matter Experts to ensure the interpretation and application of standards and/or requirements ensuring compliance and consistency
  • Provide education and exchange of information across multiple divisions.
  • Support design teams on obtaining approvals/certifications, interacting with certification bodies to resolve testing requirements discrepancies and standards interpretation.
  • Apply analytical analysis of processes in place, and determine areas for improvement.
  • Study, design and promote the generation, transmission and storage of electro-chemical energy in an efficient manner.
  • Apply your design and development experience to Ship and Submarine Main Storage Batteries, Underwater Manned and Unmanned Propulsion Batteries, Lithium Batteries.
  • Provide technical guidance to Energy Management and Control Systems, Uninterrupted Power Supplies and Controls, Fuel Cells, Energy Storage Capacitors, Flywheels, and other High Energy Dense sources.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role you must have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Elextrical Engineering, or related technical/scientific discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in an Engineering field.
  • Experience planning, coordinating, and/or supervising team or project activities.
  • 10% travel required.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with lithium-ion batteries and storage requirements.
  • Experience with DOD lithium-ion safety regulations/standards.
  • Experience in submarine or shipboard operations to include emergency response and firefighting techniques in the unique environments
  • 2 or more years of work experience with regulations or industry standards relating to lithium Ion batteries and/or battery stowage systems.
  • Familiarity with Cameo is a plus.

In compliance with state and local laws regarding pay transparency, the salary range for this role is $78,073.24 to $130,122.06; however, Serco considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills.
