Position Description

Are you an Air Quality Monitoring Field Scientist Lead responsible for all aspects of managing a Air Program and want to make a difference every day while traveling around the Pacific Northwest, then Serco has a place for you.

 

You will travel a significant amount (~70%) to collect ambient air samples over a multi-state environmental air monitoring network. Your destinations of travel will be Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska. Position is based in Manchester, WA, when not traveling.

 

In this role, you will: 

  • Drive and maintain a mobile lab to audit air quality monitoring stations while following The Clean Air Act is the law that defines EPA's responsibilities for protecting and improving the nation's air quality and the stratospheric ozone layer.
  • Coordinate and collect ambient air samples over a multi-state environmental monitoring network.
  • Facilitate and prioritize the annual schedules of data collection activities with participating agencies, in accordance with DOT regulations.
  • Perform Air Monitoring using the PM2.5 equipment, NPAP-TTP Air Monitoring
  • QA/QC reporting.
  • Perform equipment maintenance/calibration.
  • Conduct mobile laboratory maintenance.
  • Completing required trainings.
  • Maintain professional and technical relationship/discussions with the customer.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To be successful in the role, you will have:

 

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Security, pass a background check, and drug screen.
  • Verification of a US valid driving license with a clean record and be able to provide documentation of proof of Auto insurance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in the Physical or Life Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Biology) or a related scientific discipline and 2 years of relevant experience related to the job description listed above,additional four years of experience may be substituted in lieu of four year degree.
  • The ability to demonstrate a strong written and verbal communications skills, to think critically, and direct analytical Laboratory experience.
  • The understanding of health and safety standard concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • A strong math background to perform calculations and other data reduction activities is essential.
  • A strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and use of spreadsheets.
  • The ability to conduct repetitive motion with hands, lifting to 50 pounds, physically conveying an Air Monitor to the tops of buildings or sampling platforms, moving compressed gas cylinders, and visual determination of precise measurements.
  • Have particulate matter, PM2.5, PM10, and TTP sampling certifications or experience.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities
  • Ability to be flexible, multi-task, prioritize, and manage multiple activities simultaneously in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Strong collaborator with the ability to both collaborate and to take initiative and work well independently.
  • Superior diligence and the ability to meet stringent deadlines.
  • A valid US Driver’s license and be insurable. 
  • Have some knowledge of operating and maintaining a mobile lab vehicle.

 

Preferred Experience, Education, and Certifications:

  • OSHA certifications
  • OSHA HAZWOPER 40-Hour certification
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification
  • 3 years of working experience as an Air Quality Monitoring Field Scientist
  • 3 years of working experience with particulate matter, PM2.5, PM10, and TTP with sampling certifications and experience.

In compliance with state and local laws regarding pay transparency, the salary range for this role is $53,035.55 to $79,553.32; however, Serco considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills.
