Position Description

Serco Inc., a provider of professional, technology, engineering, and management services, has been awarded a new contract to manage the repairs and upgrades of the back-up electrical plant at the Pituffik Space Base (PSB), in Greenland. Pituffik Space Base (formerly known as Thule Air Base) supporting missile warning, missile defense, and various space surveillance missions.

 

Serco is hiring a Welder to be a part of a dynamic team supporting other experts upgrading the current backup plant on Pituffik Space Base. You will be part of a team that works closely with other Serco team members to deliver quality work in support of the US Army Corps of Engineers and the newly created US Space Force.

 

In support of this contract, Serco has also subcontracted with Aarsleff, a local Danish construction engineering company. After completion, the new alternate power plant will provide greater and more stable electrical capacity to the DoD’s northernmost installation. You will be part of a 15-20 member Serco team that manages subcontractors, and self performs construction and installation work at Pituffik Space Base, Greenland.  Serco will support USACE in renovating the Power Building (J-Plant) and providing it with High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) protective measures.  Serco's site leadership has extensive experience successfully working USACE projects worldwide including a previous HEMP upgrade successfully completed in 2021.

 

In this role, you will:

  • Perform high-quality welding in the 3G, 4G, and 5F positions on various pipe and plate materials.
  • Interpret and work from blueprints, drawings, and welding procedure specifications.
  • Ensure all welding work complies with AWS D1.1 standards.
  • Collaborate with engineers, supervisors, and other team members to meet project goals.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment in accordance with company policies and OSHA regulations.
  • Follow instructions from supervisors.
  • Ready to learn from on-the-job training when necessary.
  • Other responsibilities will include general construction work and assisting team members as needed.
  • Able to work as part of a team.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • An Associates Degree
  • Minimum 5-years of experience in industrial, construction, pipeline, and/or HEMP welding
  • Must be able to pass 3G, 4G Welding test
  • Must be able to pass fabrication test
  • Familiarity with structural and pipe welding
  • Strong fundamental knowledge of structural and pipe system welding techniques
  • Ability to read and interpret technical blueprints and schematics
  • Field welding experience
  • The ability to read and convert metric and SAE dimensions
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record 
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to travel 75%+ 
    • Valid U.S Passport required (more than 6 months from expiration date)

Additional desired experience and skills: 

  • Previous welding certification in 3G and 4G Mig/GMAW/FCAW welding
  • Experience in oil & gas, petrochemical, HEMP, or industrial construction environments
  • Familiarity with welding inspection tools and techniques
  • Additional certifications in related welding disciplines and inspection
  • Previous experience creating weld procedures
  • Welding or trade school degree or certificate
  • Previous construction experience
  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs. and work in confined spaces or elevated areas
  • Capable of standing, bending, and working in various positions for extended periods
