Serco is seeking an experienced Senior Marine Engineer / Ship Design Manager to lead the full lifecycle of ship design and build projects. This role requires deep technical expertise in marine engineering as well as the leadership capability to oversee and integrate all design phases, from concept development through detailed engineering, construction, installation, testing, and delivery. The ideal candidate will combine strong engineering foundations with proven program and project management skills in the maritime industry.
This position is contingent upon your ability to transfer and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance
In this role, you will:
Manage the complete design process for newbuild ships and major refits, including concept design, preliminary design, detailed design, production support, and final build.
Provide leadership across multidisciplinary engineering teams (structural, mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering) to ensure seamless integration of design deliverables into shipyard production and construction phases.
Develops, engineers, and prepares ship machinery and propulsion systems.
Designs and oversees installation and repair of marine power plants, propulsion systems, heating and ventilating systems, and other mechanical and electrical equipment in ships, docks, and marine facilities.
Study drawings and specifications and perform complex calculations to conceive equipment and systems designed to meet requirements of marine craft or facilities.
Ensure compliance with classification society rules, international maritime regulations, and internal quality standards.
Interface with shipyards, subcontractors, classification societies, and customers to resolve technical issues during design and build phases.
Oversee and evaluate the operation of equipment during acceptance testing and shakedown cruises, providing technical direction and corrective actions as needed.
May specialize in design of equipment, such as boilers, steam-driven reciprocating engines, heat exchangers, fire-control and communication systems, electric power systems, or piping and related fittings and valves.
Drive schedule adherence, cost control, and risk management throughout the design and build lifecycle.
Provide mentoring, guidance, and technical oversight to junior engineers and designers.

To be successful in this role, you will have:
Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in marine engineering, ship design, and/or shipbuilding, with at least 5 years in a leadership role overseeing full project lifecycles
Demonstrated expertise in ship machinery, propulsion systems, and marine mechanical/electrical systems
Strong knowledge of shipyard production methods, modular construction, and integration of design with build
Proficiency with engineering design software and tools (e.g., AutoCAD, ShipConstructor, NAPA, AVEVA, or equivalent)
Solid understanding of regulatory frameworks (ABS, DNV, USCG, IMO, SOLAS, etc.)
Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
Hands-on shipyard or sea trial experience
Prior experience managing cross-border or multi-yard ship construction programs

In compliance with state and local laws regarding pay transparency, the salary range for this role is $140,006.27 to $242,632.34; however, Serco considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills.
