Position Description

DOTD Police Dispatcher – Baton Rouge, LA

As a DOTD Police Dispatcher, you will play a vital role in ensuring public safety by coordinating emergency responses, assisting law enforcement, and supporting transportation operations across Louisiana. This position requires quick thinking, clear communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

 

What You’ll Do

 

As a Police Dispatcher, you can expect to:

  • Receive and process telephone, radio, teletype, and alarm calls for emergency responders
  • Enter and retrieve information in the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system
  • Dispatch police vehicles by radio, CAD, or phone, relaying orders to officers at emergencies, crime scenes, crashes, and other incidents requiring law enforcement
  • Ensure all communications comply with Department and FCC regulations, using proper radio protocol and 10-codes (if applicable)
  • Coordinate with the Officer in Charge (OIC) or Incident Management Coordinator (IMC) to dispatch back-up units as needed
  • Facilitate radio communication with local police departments, the Traffic Management Center (TMC), Motorist Assistance Patrol (MAP), and other emergency responders
  • Dispatch police vehicles to medical calls and notify ambulance services when necessary
  • Monitor and operate ATMS iNet software to control and observe field devices such as CCTV cameras, Digital Message Signs (DMS), ramp meters, and emergency gates
  • Input, retrieve, and transmit information through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) system and state motor vehicle files
  • Report major emergencies or criminal activity to the Chief or Officer in Charge
  • Maintain accurate records, including daily logs, wrecker rotation logs, security system files, and case incident reports
  • Prepare files and court information records as needed
  • Perform equipment tests, minor maintenance, and report failures to supervisors
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and complete related clerical/administrative duties

Qualifications

Qualifications – To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Technical knowledge from prior communications experience or on-the-job training
  • Strong verbal communication skills under stressful conditions
  • Proficiency in typing and using CAD systems, CCTV, radio equipment, and computer software
  • Ability to obtain NCIC certification
  • Availability to work 12-hour shifts in a 24/7 operation, including nights, weekends, and holidays

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1–2 years of prior police or emergency response dispatching experience
  • Knowledge of public safety operations
